Test knitting allows you the opportunity to make an accessory or garment in advance of my design releases. Basically, yarn plus lots of knitting fun.

I am excited that you’re interested in becoming a northknits test knitter! This is a fun and engaging opportunity to assist me in creating northknits knitwear, that highlight my modern design aesthetic, size inclusivity, and professional technique.
Looking forward to working and knitting together!

  • Test knitting allows you the opportunity to make an accessory or garment in advance of my design releases. I am currently knitting sweaters and cardigans, but testing can also include hat, scarf, cowl, socks, and mitten designs!

  • The goal is to make the design, based on my sample knit, to primarily ensure fit. Test knit patterns are tech-edited and pre-published.

Test knitting also confirms pattern details, clarity, and size inclusivity.

My knit sample size is usually small based on CYC garment standards.
I look for test knitters to double check my work, and to also test sizes Extra Small - 5X.

  • Test knitting deadlines fluctuate but I typically have a deadline of 3-5 weeks.

Specs for test knitting like pattern details, test due dates, and launch dates are provided to chosen applicants. I choose knitters and crocheters who are community engaged, have beginner to advanced knitwear knowledge, and a strong work ethic.

  • If you’re engaged on social media including insta, tik tok, or Youtube, that’s a bonus, though if you’re not, you will not be excluded. If you can provide thorough feedback and high-res photos of your test design, we can potentially work together!

Pattern feedback is super important in test knitting work, so makers chosen must commit to engagement with me via e-mail with efforts to collaborate on the Slack platform.

So why do I use Slack for test knitting? Here’s why: excluding knitters at any point, including in the pre-published test process is uncool, never ok, not my vibe. Slack helps us collaborate and chat in an inclusive and productive manner on an easy to use platform!

  • Upon applying, yarn specs will be provided, so you can have it ready to go for testing. I try my best to offer yarn subs, but as this can affect the final design, I offer priority to testers who can use the specified yarn.

Most of my designs do not allow for alterations, so if a pattern calls for specific colorwork or stitch work, then that is the preferred design to be test. However, if you have recommendations to better the design, your feedback is welcome.

  • Yay! Please sign up below. I have an upcoming sweater design needed for testing for Summer 2023 release. Applicants signed up and chosen are notified within 1 week of submission. By signing up, you’ll also be the first to get test knit dates on your calendar early.

  • Sort of. Meaning if you successfully test knit a pattern design with me, then the fully tech-edited and formatted pattern in PDF is yours to keep! You can also enjoy another northknits pattern of your choice on me! I also offer highlighting your work on my social media platform to an audience of nearly 30,000.

I do offer compensation for sample knitting, and open those callouts as needed. Compensation would be on an hourly basis or based on yardage used, for example 15 – 30 cents per yard.
