About Northknits
I’m Jewell Washington, the designer and founder of Northknits — a knitwear brand focused on thoughtful design, accessible materials, and a deep love for community. With a background in journalism and corporate marketing, I launched Northknits in 2014 as a creative space to share modern, minimalist patterns and inspire others to find joy in the craft.
Through Northknits and the community I founded at Our Maker Life, I create approachable knitting patterns, meaningful content, and events that bring makers together. I believe in slow living, inclusivity, and the power of handmade connection — and I’m passionate about helping knitters feel confident, inspired, and supported.
At Northknits, I design knitwear that embodies warmth, simplicity, and authenticity. Rooted in slow living and easeful style, my work blends modern aesthetics with timeless techniques to highlight cozy textures, minimalist silhouettes, and the creative rhythm and dreaminess of Chicago downtown city life.
My approach is grounded in purpose: intentional design, sustainable practices, and accessible materials that invite everyone into the craft. I honor knitting’s traditions while making space for new voices, championing diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values of my brand. Whether through patterns, teaching, or community gatherings, Northknits is about connection to our creativity, to each other, and to the joy of making something meaningful by hand.
Thanks for being here, I’m thrilled that we get to share this creative space together!
