Color Theory Yarn Review

When I’m knitting, loving my yarn is important in how it makes me feel and in how it works up. I enjoy reaching for and using yarn that feels dependable and balanced in fiber content, texture, color and how it theoretically helps me knitwear design.

Color Theory by Lion Brand Yarn is exactly that — my reliable go-to yarn with so much to love.

When I collaborated with LBY to design The Sidewalk Sweater, a top-down raglan with bold stripes and relaxed fit, I needed a yarn that I could trust. A yarn to deliver on structure and softness. A soft and pretty yarn that I could toss in my tote bag on the way to the coffee shop. Color Theory is the yarn that I reach for over and over as it works up like a dream and really highlights my patterns and wips.

Color Theory is a great fiber and is:

  • Crafted from 100% premium acrylic

  • Smooth, breathable, and lightweight

  • A great skein offering 246 yards (225 meters) in a 100g ball

  • Weight: Worsted / 4 – Medium

  • Knit Gauge: 20 sts x 27 rows on US 7 (4.5 mm)

  • Crochet Gauge: 14 sc x 20 rows on I-9 (5.5 mm)

  • Great for garment knitting

  • Soft enough for direct-to-skin wear, but with the structure needed to hold shape

I love to knit my sweaters in Color Theory as it has this cool balance between drape and durability. It’s made for real life too, machine washable and dryable, and perfect for those pieces that you want to travel in, layer over, or cozy up with coffee to make.

Color Theory delivers smooth stitch definition and almost zero splitting which is a big win when knitting with raglan shaping, textured stitches, or ribbing. It glides through your fingers but doesn’t slip off the needles, which makes it beginner-friendly and satisfying for seasoned knitters.

I knit my Sidewalk Sweater sample in Satellite for my main color and the stripes in Thunder.

Both colors are versatile and really made it easy to style with my denim, gold hoops, and Coach crossbody.

A Lesson in Color Theory, ©Two of Wands

I really love this modern curated palette and the cool collaboration with Alexi Tavel, Two of Wands creator and designer and Lion Brand Yarn. Alexi’s vision and talent shine through in all 18 shades. The way she explains the theory behind color, and how yarn hues interact when making is so thoughtful. Every color feels intentional and offers minimalist neutrals and bold tones that are all timeless, versatile, and easy to mix, match, and layer.

The palette has range from a warm cream, warm beige, denim blue, red-chocolate brown, and warm rusty orange, to a cool grey-purple, deep teal, greeny mustard yellow, and a bit in between too.

My top Color Theory favorites are:

  • Satellite (cool medium grey)

  • Thunder (cool dark grey)

  • Bee Pollen (bright green yellow)

  • Admiral (deep navy)

  • Nutmeg (warm brown)

  • Caper (warm olive green)

  • Moonbeam (cool pale grey)

  • Himalayan Salt (pinky peach)

Each color makes choosing and knitting easy and fun, things you’ll be excited to add into your wardrobe. This yarn elevates stitch details and brings a clean, modern finish to knits.
