Winterwish Knit Cowl

It’s been a frigid -20° January here in Chicago which only brought two words to mind: stay warm.

My newest knit design, the Winterwish Cowl, offers just that. I’ve been bundling up and spending time indoors at coffee shops wearing my knit cowl after surviving multiple days in subzero temps and risk of downtown city frost quakes.

But when it comes to cozy, I can’t stop, won’t stop. So the colder it gets, the more excited I get to knit.

The Winterwish Cowl combines basic smooth stitches with a cool neutral meets color pop trio. Knit for a classic infinity look in 100% wool yarn, the unique blend of hues add vibrancy and create a winter wardrobe staple.

In designing my mood board, I wanted to evoke a few things:

  • Basic design stitches

  • Natural wool fibers

  • Neutral tones

  • Color pop

  • Easy Wearability

  • Modern and minimal design to pair with casual city outfits

  • Wardrobe staple that I would grab for all season long

I wanted chilly winter days and slow living to feel like a wish come true while exploring effortless chic style to stay warm. This is what sparked the name Winterwish and it was important for me to create a knit kit that offered a warm and snug cowl as well as an easeful, fun, and relaxing knitting experience.

What I love about this worsted cowl is knitting it with Local Grown Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. I researched color theory when designing the Winterwish cowl, envisioning a piece with color that felt good next to neutral and casual. I also love the way the cherry blossom pops next to the mustang and quail, but all three colors still have cool matte undertones. I knit this in stitches to keep with the basic look in domestic wool that is soft and warm, that gets even softer with a quick steam block.

Here’s why I love Lion Brand’s Local Grown Yarn:

Sustainably Sourced This yarn is crafted from 100% USA wool, promoting sustainability and supporting local farmers.

Domestic Production The yarn is made in the USA, ensuring quality control and contributing to the local economy.

Versatility Its worsted weight is perfect for project range, from chunky cowls to wearable sweaters!

So Soft Like oooh la la soft. Despite its rustic origins, this yarn is comfortable against the skin.

Community focused Knitting with this yarn supports local farming communities, promoting sustainable practices and ethical sourcing in the textile industry.

Local Grown offers beautiful colors too. The rich and diverse color palette gives ways to cast on with creative expression and customization. The yarn is made from natural, untreated wool which preserves the fiber authenticity and purity. Being 100% wool, it provides excellent warmth and insulation, making it perfect for winter accessories like my cowl.

In addition to my cherry blossom- mustang- quail trio, I’ve compiled six other color palette options:

  • Lilac, Quail, Mustang

  • Beetroot, Quail, Mustang

  • Moss, Hickory, Barn

  • Sagebrush, Hickory, Barn

  • Maple, Hickory, Barn

  • Vanilla Bean, Bluegrass, Blue jeans

If you’re comfortable with easy/beginner plus skills, you can definitely knit this cowl. My pattern calls for about four balls of yarn on 5mm/US 8 needles. The dimensions are 15" (38cm) x 65" (165cm) blocked and before seaming. The pattern includes full clear details and guides you through step by step and row by row. Watch my new knitting video tutorial to also get started.

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I have knitting and designing it. Use the hashtag #winterwishcowl and #lionbrandyarn when you post on Instagram so I can see your gorgeous work!
